This is basically a new 'series' i'll be starting. Since I'm Supernintendolover, I thought of doing a series where I would play through my snes games in random order and give my in depth thoughts on them. I will also be adding a personal little history I have with the games. So lets get started with illusion of gaia/time.Story: illusion of gaia's story has a lot of great life lessons through out that I believe makes the player stop and think about how our world is.
Hamlet: Kara's brave little piggy pet who has an intelligence far surpassing most pigs'. Grandma Lola and Grandpa Bill: Will's grandparents live in South Cape. Grandpa Bill was the one who built Edward Castle, and Lola hails from Itory Village in the north. She can sing quite well, and cook quite inventively (snail pies?). There are themes of canabalism, slavery and suicide. Throughout the game you are reminded that these things are inevitable, they are things that unfortunately cannot be rid of, despite how horrible they are. The main goal of the game is to allow man kind to be able to evolve into the modern era by destroying the comet that inhibits this. However even though you are helping man kind progress as a whole, there is also a sense of fustration in the fact that you can only do very little to help the misfortune. For example in the canabalism village Hamlet sacrifices himself in order to give the villages food and save us from being eaten.
However once they eat hamlet, what will they eat next? They'll end up eating their other family members to the point where only one is left, it's sad to think about.Gameplay: I think the gameplay is done very well in this game. Defeating enemies is fun and the fact that you don't have to grind is a bonus. Not only that but the varietg of moves and the different characters you get to play as really adds to the gameplay.
I think it's great that instead of having levels, you increase your strength and health seperately throughout the game, it's a nice feature.Characters: i'm going for the characters you see through out the entire game. Excluding billie and lola:Will: what's to say about Will? First of all he is the main protagonist of the game and is the one that must save mankind. Will is a great chracter in my opinion. He's a boy that starts off a little uncertain about his task, only wanting to see his father again. However as the game progesses he grows into more of a hero and becomes more involved in his task to save mankind.
He is also very caring, especially towards his friends.Kara: Kara is the daughter of king edward and Will's lover. Kara starts off as a spolit brat. She at first only cares about herself and hamlet, and has no regard to anyone else, thinking because she is a princess she is entitles to everything. However her character can also be sympathise with as she is someone who is very stricted and deep down she is a child that wants to see more of the world. As the game progresses Kara becomes less selfish and starts to realise tge reality of the situation.Lilly: very likeable character, she's always willing to help her friends, even going with Will to Mu and helping out of Edwards castle.Lance: not much I can say about Lance, except that he falls in love with Lilly.Eric: to me eric is sort of a humerous character.
He doesn't add much to the story, but he's great to hang around with!Seth: can't say much about him.Neil: all round cool guy. He's very determined about his inventions and is very positive on his outlook on life, believing he can truly help the misfortune.Freedan: playable character. Not much to say except he can defezt enemies a lot quicker and is stronger than Will.Shadow: another playable character. Not much say on this either except that he can make himself become liquid.Music: the music in this game is great! Sure it's no chrono trigger or donkey kong country but it does have it's catchy tunes. Songs such as 'the gaurdians', south cape and clash between light and shadow are great!Graphics: for a game that came out in 1992/3, the graphics are stunning.
One of things I really enjoy about the way the game looks is the way Will's hair would move when he is running or in a windy area.Things that needed improvements:The translation: illusion of gaia's translation is pretty bad, there are times through out the gane where somethings make no sense. For example it is sometimes hard to tell when someone is narrating or talking. It feels like Will is talking, then realising he is actually narating. This happened during the drifting.Freedan and shadow: honnestly It woukd have been grear if we could get some background on these characters or what exactly their connection is to Will. They don't really have much to them at all, especially shadow, he feels like he was thrown in randomly.lilly and lance: there should have been a build up to their relationship. To me it just came out of the blue.Well that's my thoughts on illusion of gaia, feel free to mention anything I haven't.
Also what are your thoughts on the game?. Nice write-up.
I agree with you that it works better as an adult than when I was a child. As a kid, I was hoping for something like A Link to the Past, and other than the combat, this is pretty different. I never managed to get far into it until I tried it in college, when I finally beat it. The translation does make it a bit harder than it should be. There were various times that I couldn't determine where to go or what to do next.
Overall, great game, though.I don't think the romance between Lilly and Lance was that out of the blue. From what I recall, they were kind of stuck together for a long time, so it didn't seem strange that a romance might develop while you weren't watching. Not every couple is composed of star-crossed lovers, although some type of foreshadowing maybe wouldn't have hurt.I didn't feel that much explanation was needed for Freedan and Shadow. The game seemed to present them as previous incarnations or ancesters of Will, and he was tapping into them.
Part 29: In Which Will Attends a BarbecueSince we’re on our way back, it’s a good time to hang out in line before things go any further. It takes a while, but one by one characters in line will move inside and then rejoin at the back of the line. “Wait, what?” “Rolek manages this store, too. I understand, please take whatever you like.” The first upgrade is a straightforward Life Boost. Not sure if this is what people meant about a hidden boost, but this is what we have. Those people in line who keep circling around must have a TON of life. We’ve actually already gotten the second upgrade, which is a boost to Dark Friar’s power. Getting all of the Red Jewels let us pick it up a bit earlier, but you do actually have a chance to get the upgrade even if you don’t pick up Jewels. Other than that, the next step is to use the Teapot. It’s not explicitly spelled out, but the proper place to use it is one of Neil’s parents. “Well, that’s not exactly the last thing I was expecting but it’s pretty high up there on the list.” “Ku ku ku… soon this world will be wrapped in darkness. The previous owner of this body is now a skeleton sleeping under the shrine.” “Okay, I thought that was a murdered slave child. Not sure if this is better or worse, honestly.” “I finally realize how important my parents are to me. I wish I could have told them..” “Seems like it’s just a little bit late for that.” “Will… just leave me alone for a while…” “What the HELL, Will? I just lost my parents.” “Welcome to the club.” “…” “Probably for the best that way. I think anybody else in charge would just keep the whole thing going.” “Heh heh. Stop it. You’re embarrassing me. Kara, someone’s come asking about you. Something about being an old friend.” “Um, Kara, there’s something we need to talk about.” “What!!!!?” “Hey! Come in!” “Oink oink!” “What happened? Are you OK?” “Ha ha. He’s come all this way looking for you. No idea how he found you, but pigs are strange.” “Even if I’m losing my traveling companions, my allies are increasing!” “I just don’t understand women.” “You and me both, buddy. And since we’re the only guys left here except for Hamlet, that’s important.” “That is where the laborer’s home is located. Let’s go!” “Sounds like a plan to me, I’m kind of done with this place.” Leaving out we’ve got an adorable Hamlet following Kara, as well as Erik. I’m starting to wonder what kind of horrible thing will happen to Erik at this point. At any rate, we don’t need to do any backtracking so this is our next destination. “Kara, this is the tropics. Just in case the plants weren’t a clue.” “I see the world tilted, my eyes blurred.” “There’s nothing we can do. Let’s stay in this village today.” “Should we go into the houses?” “If the place is haunted, it’s haunted all over. The houses can’t be any worse.” Before going into the houses, we’ve also got a Dark Space to save and heal. We’re not in any danger, but there’s something fairly significant coming up. In addition to three presumably creepily lifelike statues, this room has a Red Jewel hidden in the pot by the door. That’s not the only thing in here, but we’ll have to come back later for it. “Which means they’ve been gone for a little while, but not too long…” “That’s good. We can rest if we want. I’m exhausted. I feel like sleeping for days.” “I agree. Let’s rest today.” “Sounds like a good idea. Hamlet, you’re on guard.” “What… Hamlet… let me sleep a while longer…” “Uhhn… What? Will… don’t be so noisy…” “Wait, you’re not Hamlet!” “AH! Who! Who are you?!” A few minutes later… “Look. Those children look so upset… “That’s right… the servant boy said that in Freejia. There’s so much famine in this country…” “What… what are you saying Will?” “I wouldn’t be so sure that those people starved. They look awfully serious about that fire they’re building.” “Oh, no! We’ll be next!!” “Hamlet… why such a sad look? It’s as if we’ll soon be separated…” “Hamlet!! Hamlet!!” “He..jumped in the fire? Hamlet… Why?” “That is the question. Whether tis nobler to have the bacon or the cho… no, Kara would kill me either way.” “Hamlet…!” “One baby pig could save many villagers.” “Mother…?” “Will… and everyone in this place…Darkness is approaching the world. You must combine your strength to save the planet.” “Thanks for showing up and telling me that after I’d already picked up two thirds of the statues.” “Don’t you sass me! I may be dead, but that doesn’t mean I’ll put up with any of your lip.” “Yes ma’am!” “That’s a good boy. Now, off with you to go save the world.” “Brothers, sisters, husbands, wives…. how do they cope?” “Mostly by killing travelers and eating their least favorite relatives. Remember, what almost happened to us?” “I have a feeling that neither of you are going to be much help for a while.” “Pork is amazing.” “Maybe she won’t notice if I just take a…” “Will, leave Hamlet be. He’s for the villagers, since he wasn’t their friend.” “He WAS my friend. Now he’s delicious.” “No!” “Fine, have it your way. You hang out at the barbecue, I’m going to this temple that are new friends marked for me.” “Ankor Wat. Sounds like a nice place.” Next update: It is not a nice place. Comments are closed.
